Choosing Guide
These are not the same thing, and the difference matters when choosing a mattress.
Support
How well the mattress holds your body in the right position. This is determined by the spring unit and core construction — and your body weight is the main factor here.
Comfort feel
How the surface feels when you lie down. This is shaped by the comfort layers and fillings on top — and your sleeping position is the main factor here.
A mattress can have firm support but still have a softer comfort feel on top. These are separate things, and getting both right is what makes the difference.
Your weight determines the level of support you need. This is the starting point.
Up to 9.5st (60kg)
Lighter builds benefit from more surface cushioning. A softer or medium support level tends to work well.
9.5st–15.5st (60–98kg)
The most common range. Medium to Medium-Firm tends to suit most sleeping positions. See position guidance below.
15.5st–17st (98–108kg)
Side sleepers: Medium-Firm. Back, front, or mixed sleepers: Medium-Firm or Firm.
17st–20st (108–127kg)
Side and mixed sleepers: Firm support with enough surface comfort to reduce pressure at the shoulders and hips.
20st+ (127kg+)
Standard mattresses can sag at this weight over time. Extra Firm or specialist heavy-duty support is recommended.
Once you know the support level you need, your sleeping position helps narrow down the comfort feel.
Side
Usually need more pressure relief around the shoulders and hips. A medium comfort feel works best where available — firm is fine as long as there is enough cushioning on top.
Back
Usually suit Medium-Firm support. A flat, well-supported surface keeps the spine in a neutral position.
Front
Usually need Medium-Firm or Firm support. Without it the middle of the body can dip, which puts strain on the lower back.
Mixed
Medium or Medium-Firm usually works best, depending on body weight. Pocket springs tend to respond more easily to movement than foam-only builds.
Example
A heavier side sleeper — say 17st — still needs firm support to hold their body correctly. But because they sleep on their side, they also benefit from enough cushioning on top to reduce pressure around the shoulders and hips. The right mattress gives both: firm support beneath, with a comfortable surface above.
A quick reference for the construction types used in RentAMatt ranges.
PU foam comfort layers
Comfort feel is typically Medium. Supportive rather than soft.
Pillowtop models
Slightly softer comfort feel on top, but still built with proper support underneath. Not the same as a soft mattress.
Natural / pocket sprung models
Responsive, traditional feel. Support tends to be more consistent over time compared to foam-heavy builds.
Latex / encapsulated pocket spring models
Balanced Medium-Firm feel. Good all-round option for most builds and sleeping positions.
This guide is designed to help you choose more confidently. Comfort is personal, and if you are unsure, choose the option that best matches your weight, sleeping position and preferred feel.
Why would I do this?
With a small upfront payment and weekly payments from just £3.46, you don't need £500 in the bank to enjoy a quality, comfortable mattress.
In fact, £3.46 per week is less than the cost of a single Starbucks coffee.
So instead of putting up with an old, tired, worn-out mattress for another year, you could be sleeping on a quality new mattress from this week.
